How long can a dog run for?

Depends on the dog, breed type, level of fitness, depends on outdoor temperature, etc.
A working dog in top condition can run/jog 20-30 miles in one day. Real herding dogs that actually tend sheep all day can definitely put in those kinds of miles.
Shorter-nosed breeds (can't cool themselves off efficiently) and smaller dogs may not have anywhere near the same level of endurance as a larger working breed with proper structure & in good physical shape.
Owners running their dogs should always be aware of the dog's level of exertion, provide water at regular intervals, check on the condition of his paw pads regularly, and avoid running the dog when it is too hot, too cold, or in snow or rocky terrain without frequent breaks to check the dog's feet.
A dog in ideal condition whose owner keeps common sense & the dog's safety in mind can generally jog with a dog for 5-10 miles with ease.
