How to tame my budgie?

Postby Preethi715 » Sat Dec 26, 2009 1:24 am

She is a girl, and I've had her for about 2 weeks now.

I left her alone for the first week, only changing the water, food and cleaning the cage. So she's pretty used to the surroundings and her cage.

No Before yesterday I decided I should get her tamed, so I sat next to her cage and talked quietly to her, then I stuck my hand in the cage while I watched a film.

So now she's used to my hand and not scared of it, I can put it in the cage, she just freezes for half a second and then goes back to her business not minding my hand. I can even hold it next to her real close, like right in front of her.

She takes any treats/food from my hand, she's DEFINETELY not afraid of it.

Problem is, I can touch her beak, but when I even try to touch her head she moves it right away, when I pet her back/sides/wings she freezes and then turns her head around to face my hand and opens her beak.

Whenever I try to push my hand lightly against her belly (to get her to clib onto my finger) she just attempts to bite me.

What's the matter with her?

Will she ever allow me to pet/hold her? And if she will how can I do this?

xoxo

How to tame my budgie?

Postby Princess » Sat Dec 26, 2009 1:35 am

Hi.. i had the exact same problem!!! don't worry she will get used to you!!! Next time you go to get her to step up, gently push against the bottom of her stomach near her feet. i tried this and she pecked my hand and held onto my finger.. hard!! when she tries to do this gently push back on her beak with your finger.. she will let go! move your hand away and try again. They hate it! Keep trying this! it wont hurt her! i didnt like doing it to her at first but if it was going to stop her biting it was worth it! And she learns that if she bites you thats what she will get back! it shouldnt take long for her to learn! after the first session with my budgie she never tried to bite again! good luck! :)

How to tame my budgie?

Postby Kezia » Sat Dec 26, 2009 1:41 am

here is what i did. when i first got my bird, i waited for about 2 weeks so my bird is used to the surroundings. then what i started doing was get a millet stick, and hand feed to him. it took a while but then he started eating it. then after that i started giving him food from his food bowl, once again it took a while but he couldnt resist the power of seeds so he started eating. basically after that he got more used to my finger. then i would start putting my finger next to him. he would just look at it for a long while, then he started licking/touching my finger till then he jumped to it. at first he was bitting me, but not in an aggressive way, and after that, the bittings turned into kisses, etc.

sometimes my bird will like it when i touch his feathers and sometimes he will get mad.

it is way more harder to tame a female trust me. but not impossible. female budgies tend to be alot more mean and stubborn. males are really friendly onv the other hand.

hope i helped.

Hi

with two budgies they wont get as tame as a sinlge one they may not even tame at all, if you were looking for a tame and loving pet bird you should have gotten one, it wouldnt be lonely with a large cage plenty of toys and daily interaction from you, offering treats throguht cage bars never worked for me thou some claim it does, the best results I've had is to take them out of the cage one by one in your hadn or in a light towel, this is where clipped wings comes in handy, take the bird to another room, bathroom works great if its quite and be sure all open drains are sealed and that there isnt a window open and be sure to close the tolite seat, take the bird out of the toel adn sit it on your hand or arm getting it on your finger will be diffcut when taking it out of the towel, talk to it gentaly and stroke its back, if it flys away when you touch it pick it up and try again, keep trying until he doesnt move when yuor petting him, offering a treat now may work now, try a piece of spary millet, do this with each bird around three times a day for ten/fifteen minutes each time after a week there should be some change in tehre behavier towards you if there isnt then its safe to say tehy will never be tame.

Thanks

Hi guys

So you're home from the petstore, budgie in hand, and you want to play with him. Not so fast! This will take time. For the first few days, talk quietly to him when you're in his room, and get him used to your movements around the cage.Once he's settled down a bit, you can begin step 2. Open the cage door and stick your hand in. Hold in a non-theatening position for about 5 minutes. After e few days, when he's not so skittish aroud your hand, take your finger and push it against where his legs join his body. This will force him to step up onto your finger, or move back in the cage. Once he starts sitting quietly on your finger after a few days, you can take him into a safe room with no obvious perches. Get him on your finger, and gently pull him out through the door. Be patient. He may not come out on the first try. Take him out for 5 minutes, then put him back. Do this several times a day. After a few days, you should have a tame budgie! Now you can take him out for prolonged periods. Introduce to all the rooms he'll be allowed in.

Thanks for all friends
