Leather Furniture Care Tips

Postby shylock34 » Wed Feb 10, 2010 10:18 am

Hi

When you buy leather furniture for your home or office you expect it to be durable. With the proper care and handling your leather furniture can and will meet those expectations. Here are some tips for cleaning and caring for your leather furniture.

Maintenance:

Do dust your leather with a soft dry cotton cloth on a regular basis. Dust and oils from human skin can wear down the leather over time.

Don’t use an abrasive brush or a microfiber cloth. Also, keep your leather furniture from being exposed to the sun, which can cause discoloration.

Use Distilled Water Only:

Do remove or minimize a stain by blotting with distilled water. Blot at the stain until the towel or rag comes back dry. Then let the stain sit for 24 hours before re-evaluating it.

Don’t soak your leather in tap water or cleaner, as this could create a worse stain than the original. Please don’t use a rubbing motion! Gently blot as much of the stain away as possible.

Leather furniture is one of the most sought after types of furniture today. Leather is very attractive and extremely durable.Leather is also extremely easy to maintain. Caring for your new leather furniture is sometimes overlooked, but to hold the value of your furniture, you should follow a few simple tips so that you can keep your leather looking, feeling, and even smelling new.
* Don't sweat small scratches. They often heal over time, becoming less conspicuous. Any noticeable deep scratches in leather upholstery can be covered with a commercial leather dye.
* Manufacturers sell touch-up kits in the same color as the furniture. (Consider buying one or two kits when you purchase the piece, in case the color is discontinued.)
* If you have several leather pieces, label the kits to avoid confusion. If a touch-up kit isn't available or you've acquired a vintage piece, check with a shoe or leather repair shop for the closest match.

Have a nice day

Aniline Leather
Aniline leather is natural looking and will feature more noticeable marks, barbed wire scars, scratches, brands and wrinkles. The uniqueness of this leather will work for you if you are looking for a piece of furniture that is distinctive when looking at other furniture. Aniline leather should be cleaned with a soft cloth and vacuumed with a soft brush extension. You should also rub the leather down with a cleaning solution to preserve the quality of the leather.

Aniline Plus Leather
Pigmented or aniline-plus leather is another form of leather that is treated to ensure that there will be a smoother color and fewer scratches, marks and branding. This leather has also been treated to help the resistance of stains. Unlike Aniline leather, this is the most common form of leather you will find in department stores and furniture stores. You can also clean this form of leather in the same manner you would the Aniline leather; simply dust with a soft cloth and vacuum with a soft brush extension.

Nubuck Leather
Nubuck leather has been buffed to feel like velvet or suede. This is a form of leather that will have more noticeable range marks, and is more likely to stain and fade than the two other forms of leather. Using a product such as Leather Master Nubuck cleaner and protection which will help the leather resist natural body oils, liquid spills, perspiration and maintain the velvet/suede texture. This form of leather is harder to keep clean than the other two forms of leather due to the texture not being smooth like Pigmented and Aniline leather.

No cleaning will remove every stain, fading or wear. However, you will be able to maintain your leather furniture longer by removing spills immediately, dusting regularly and using care and cleaning products designed for leather furniture.

Leather Aging
It is best to refrain from placing leather goods too close to windows or other places where they will be in direct sunlight, as natural leather may fade under extensive exposure. Also, do not place your leather furniture any closer than two feet away from a radiator or similar heat source, as direct heat may also cause damage.
Sometimes the patina that aniline leather acquires can be confused with a defect in the leather. Over time your leather will develop a luster or shine which will enhance the natural beauty of the leather. This is a natural process that adds to the value of your furniture and cannot be prevented.
The key to maintaining beautiful leather is proper care and conditioning. While all furniture ages with time, neglect and harsh conditions are the primary causes of damage and deterioration of leather goods. By following the steps above, and by taking care of your furniture, you can go a long way to extending the life and beauty of your valuable leather furniture.
